SYNOPSIS

Clara is a divorced Romanian woman in her thirties, with a fractured life. She is torn apart by an inner conflict between the need for money and her duty as a mother. On one hand she works as a live-in nurse in a German city by the Danube river to raise money for her son’s education but on the other hand, she left her son Ionut back in Romania with his grandfather. They live in a small village also located on the Danube river.

She misses her son a lot as they haven’t seen each other for almost a year and she feels stuck in between worlds, like „the other”. She does not fit in neither in Germany where she is seen as an immigrant, nor in Romania where she is seen as an immoral mother who abandoned her son. 

Clara finds out that a boy in her native Romanian village went missing and may have committed suicide. At the same time, she tries to reach her family back home but nobody answers the phone. She panics and she thinks that her young boy is dead. 

When she arrives in Romania, Clara finds out that her son indeed ran away from home a few days ago and the police found him on a boat floating on the Danube river. He was alive, but with severe hypothermia. The young boy’s attempt was to navigate till Germany and  reach his mother by water, as he was missing her badly and felt abandoned. 

Clara finds him very upset. He recovered from hypothermia, but refuses to talk to her. The mother cannot reconnect with her son. When she left, he was a child and now, her son became a very furious teenager. It’s been too long since she visited him last time.

Clara faces a heartbreaking dilemma and is confronted with an impossible choice. If she chooses to stay in Romania with her family, she will lose on the money and the opportunity to provide her son with a decent living. If she goes back to Germany to earn the money they need, she will lose connection with her son. What ever the decision, there will be consequences. Finally, she makes a choice that no one thought she would be capable of. After everything what happened, the mother is forced to “abandon” the boy once again and go back to Germany to work for money.

BACKGROUND

“Clara” continues the story of two short films about Romanian woman migration. Those two films act as production trailers and examples as they present the general look, mood, locations and even cast of the future film “Clara”. Both short films can be watched by clicking the two links above. The first short film - “Way of the Danube” presents the Romanian locations on the Danube and the general look of the future film “Clara” . The second short film, “The Birthday Boy” presents the location of Clara’s house in Romania and the actress who will actually play Clara in the feature film presented in this booklet. 


DIRECTOR’S  STATEMENT

Sabin Dorohoi is a film director & producer from the western part of the famous Transylvania Region (Romania). In 2013 he founded WTS - Western Transylvania Studios, to provide full production services for international projects from Western Europe or US. He produced acclaimed short films and documentaries, selected and awarded in film festivals around the world: Los Angeles, Palm Springs, Geneva, Montpellier, Capalbio, Reykjavik, Chicago, Geneva, Rome, Berlin, Paris, Vilnius, San Francisco, Regensburg or Mexico.

“At the age of ten I witnessed my uncle and aunt’s migration from Romania to Germany. They were like older siblings to me and meant the world for me! Of course their departure came as a shock. I am actually Ionut, the young boy from the film and Clara is my aunt, who I feel very fond of even today. This is a very personal story.

After my graduation I started documenting the migration of Romanian women who work as live-in nurses in western EU. After studies, 2 short films and several documentaries, it came as a natural decision to approach this topic for my first feature film.

The artistic beauty of the story is that the Danube river metaphorically connects the boy and his mother, Romania and Germany, east and west. The same way I felt connected to  my uncle and my aunt after they left. This film is much more than an immigrant’s story. “Clara” is a personal drama of a woman who is also a mother and a daughter.

The movie will be shot in winter, with a shallow depth of field, long shots and mostly close-ups. There will be a lot of contrast and de-saturated colors. The overall monochromatic style will be amplified by the set design and costumes. The story is a neo-realistic social drama, so the cinematography will mix hand held, body-cam and Steadicam. 

Whether it is the beautiful scenery from the Danube’s Gorges or the geometric architecture of the German city, locations will play an important role in the landscape of the film. 

The sounds will be as naturalistic and clean as the cinematography. There will be scenes dominated by silence. The sounds of nature and the roar of winter will enhance the character’s feelings.

CLARA is a story of strong emotions that will confront the viewers with a painful dilemma: if I were in her shoes, what would I do?  What would I choose, the money or the family? “
